A Moment of Purity

Our backyard was supposed to be mowed weeks ago.

And I’m so glad it hasn’t been. Not because I love knee-high grass or dandelions as far as the eye can see.

Although it is kind of nice.

Rather, it is the never-ending stream of small little sparrows that find their way to the field of dandelions back there.

As I sat down to watch the rain fall outside my back window and take in the day, they came almost out of nowhere. Light enough to land on a dandelion stem, these birds were going crazy over something. Grabbing flowers and pecking at them with their beaks. I continued to watch them flitter all around, wondering what they were up to.

My guess is that they were collecting dandelion fluff for their nests or eating the seeds, but I’m glad that I don’t know. Much of what makes nature amazing is the amount of mystery that it holds.

And in that moment, I discovered something about those birds and nature itself.

Purity.

As a child of God in this fallen world, purity can seem all but lost. From the endless lies and foulness found in the media and modern-life, to the pollution claiming our seas, to the senseless killing of others, to the massive cutting down of trees. There is no end of impurity here.

It makes my soul want to cry.

Being subject to the cruelties in this world and often having few options in the way of fixing them takes its toll. Especially knowing how perfect and good God is, I can only imagine how His heart breaks at the sight of how far we have come from His original plan.

But, He always knew.

Sin would enter the world and bring with it a curse.

That’s why He sent Jesus to die for our sins.

And that is a gift.

But it wasn’t the only gift.

There is also a gift in nature. In the purity that still remains after thousands and thousands of years in a broken world.

You can hear it in the rain.

You can smell it in the flowers.

You can feel it in a gentle breeze.

You can taste it in a sun-ripened fruit.

And you can see it in the birds.

There may be trials and sorrows in this life on earth.

But God has ensured that His beauty and purity has not completely left us.

Just take a look at nature, and remember who God is. The maker of all things pure.

Praying for you,

Jasmine
