A Moment of Reflection

A sweet small little bird had died on the back porch of my work. I don’t know how, but it was lying there so still and fragile.

I got a dustpan and broom and carefully swept it up to take to the woods. As I saw this lifeless little black bird with yellow on its wings, I was reminded of a childhood memory.

My neighbors and I were going for a walk in the neighborhood, when we saw a dead sparrow on the sidewalk. We carefully picked it up with sticks and buried it in some mulch. We then found a rock and carved onto it, “here lies birdie”.

It’s strange how certain memories stay with us after so many years. And this was one dear to my heart. I gently buried it in the woods behind the lodge and said a little prayer for it. Because to some this just may be a dead bird, but to me they mattered.

And I know they mattered to the Lord. For He cares about every creation, from smallest to greatest.

Reflecting on this small bird made me think about my own life. What would this bird be remembered for? What value did it bring to the world by being here? And the answer became clear to me. This bird did exactly what the Lord designed it to. It woke up and sang and flew and lived. It possibly laid eggs and cared for baby birds of its own. It did nothing spectacular or grand, but it was purposeful.

The same truth can be applied to our own lives and walk with Jesus. We can get so wrapped up in our purpose and accomplishments that we lose sight of the bigger picture. God created us to be who we are. To do what He made us to. That could mean running a successful business. But it could also mean raising a family. Or being creative. Or simply just waking up each morning with a song to sing.

Because a life for the Lord is more than what others will remember us for. It is showing God that we lived for Him. That, in His eyes, we did exactly what He designed us to. To be in communion with Him and take joy in the life He’s blessed us with.

A life with God means that even a songbird can be significant. And every moment of our lives matters.

No matter how small it is.

Praying for you,

Jasmine
