Bible Study: Philippians 4

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

-Philippians 4:8

What do you think about?

What are the quality of thoughts going through your mind?

Do they consist of evil, worldly things, worries and fears?

Or nobility, purity, and loveliness?

Most likely, it is the former.

It would seem that all humans struggle in this broken world to hold fast to good thoughts in a sea of bad news. Everywhere we look, horrific events, potential fears, and dismal circumstances seem to keep appearing.

The Lord desires so much better for us.

Through the washing of His word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, He is transforming us. When our hearts and minds are submitted to God, they can be purified and made new.

It takes effort at first to create new ways of thinking.

One thing that can start this transformation is  Gratitude.

When fears, worries, or dark thoughts seek to grab hold of you, find one thing you are grateful for.

It could be anything.

If the mind is a battlefield, when the opposing  side brings something forward, we can meet that force with gratitude.

When we thank God for things, good and bad, we open the door to His transformative power.

Slowly, we find our minds are less swayed by the world around us.

Gratitude makes it easier to notice the lovely and good things around us. Perhaps it is a sunset, a hot cup of tea, a smile, or a peace that transcends all understanding.

There are lovely and praiseworthy things all around us.

If we will have eyes to see them.

Lord Jesus,

Thank you. Thank you for the beauty all around me. Give me eyes to see the good and lovely aspects of this day. Increase within me a heart of thankfulness.

In your name,

Amen
