“Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart,”
-Psalm 15:1-2
What does your heart speak?
It is one thing to know the truth and to read about truth. It is a different thing to live out this truth.
All too often, people “walk the walk and talk the talk”. From the outside, they appear to be following in truth. But in their hearts, they speak slander, judgment, fear, hatred, and selfishness.
No one is exempt from this struggle, as our flesh is broken from sin. But our inner man is renewed day by day, and we can choose to speak the truth in our hearts.
When someone cuts you off in traffic, you can swear out loud or in your heart. Or you can speak in your heart the truth. “God loves this person and died for them. I humble myself and trust that God will keep me safe and get me to my destination in perfect timing.”
When someone hurts your feelings, you can utter darkness in your heart about how they are a horrible person. Or you can speak in your heart, “I know that this person is struggling and speaking out of fear or pain. I can choose to love them and forgive them. Jesus, I surrender my hurt heart to you.”
This is not an easy path.
But God calls us to speak truth in our hearts.
It requires effort to retrain our minds and hearts to speak truth, but it is worth the work. God will strengthen us. And in speaking truth to our hearts, we shall never be moved.
Lord Jesus,
Strengthen me to speak the truth. Not just to others, but in the deepest part of my heart. Let me keep nothing hidden from you. Mold my heart into your image Lord.
Amen
